mac80211 should set the IEEE80211_TX_CTL_DO_NOT_ENCRYPT flag in tx_control
structure to inform drivers not to encrypt the beacon. Drivers that only check
for that flag before accessing the hw_key field, will otherwise cause a NULL
pointer dereference since that field is not configured for beacons.

Under certain circumstances (in AP mode) the debugfs function
that is supposed to add the default key symlink can encounter
a NULL default_key pointer. This patch makes it handle that
situtation gracefully.

A file in the net/mac80211 directory uses "int" for flags. This can cause
hard to find bugs on some architectures. This patch converts the flags to use
"long" instead.
This bug was discovered by doing an allyesconfig make on the -rt kernel where
checks are done to ensure all flags are of size sizeof(long).

In commit e100bb64bf (mac80211:
QoS related cleanups) I accidentally changed a variable from
int to u16 causing a warning that a comparison for < 0 was always
false. John thought this was a missing deletion of code and removed
the warning by deleting the never executed branch of code in commit
3df5ee60f1 (wireless: fix warning
introduced by "mac80211: QoS related cleanups") but the problem really
was my mistake of using a u16 variable for the queue variable when
that variable can also contain an error code. This patch restores
the original code and variable type.

This adds a new flag to the ieee80211_key_conf structure.
This flag will inform the driver the key is pairwise rather then
a shared key.
This is important for drivers who support both types of keys,
and need to be informed which type of key this is. Alternative
would be drivers checking the address argument of set_key(),
but it will be safer when mac80211 is more explicit.

The hw_key_idx inside the ieee80211_key_conf structure does
not provide all the information drivers might need to perform
hardware encryption.
This is in particular true for rt2x00 who needs to know the
key algorithm and whether it is a shared or pairwise key.
By passing the ieee80211_key_conf pointer it assures us that
drivers can make full use of all information that it should know
about a particular key.
Additionally this patch updates all drivers to grab the hw_key_idx from
the ieee80211_key_conf structure.

The error path in ieee80211_register_hw() may call the unregister_netdev()
and right after it - the free_netdev(), which is wrong, since the
unregister releases the device itself.
So the proposed fix is to NULL the local->mdev after unregister is done
and check this before calling free_netdev().
I checked - no code uses the local->mdev after unregister in this error
path (but even if some did this would be a BUG).

This reorders the open code so that WDS peer STA info entries
are added after the corresponding interface is added to the
driver so that driver callbacks aren't invoked out of order.

The put routine first decrements the users counter and then
(if it is zero) locks the sta_bss_lock and removes one from
the list and the hash.
Thus, any of ieee80211_sta_config_auth, ieee80211_rx_bss_get
or ieee80211_rx_mesh_bss_get can race with it by finding a
bss that is about to get kfree-ed.
Using atomic_dec_and_lock in ieee80211_rx_bss_put takes care
of this race.

There are two structures named wmm_info and wmm_param, they are used while
parsing the beacon frame. (Check the function ieee802_11_parse_elems).
Certain APs like D-link does not set the fifth bit in WMM IE.
While sending the association request to n-only ap it checks for wmm_ie.
If it is set then only ieee80211_ht_cap is sent during association request.
So n-only association fails.
And this patch fixes this problem by copying the wmm_info to wmm_ie,
which enables the "wmm" flag in iee80211_send_assoc.

This patch reworks the scanning code (ieee80211_rx_bss_info) to take
more parameters from beacons and keep a BSS info structure alive when
only beacons for it are received. This fixes a problem with iwlwifi
drivers (where we don't understand the root cause of the problem yet)
and another driver for some broken hardware (which cannot send probe
requests unless associated, so can't always actively scan.)

When we add multiple todo entries, we rely on them being executed
mostly in the right order, especially when a key is being replaced.
But when a default key is replaced, the todo list order will differ
from the order when the key being replaced is not a default key, so
problems will happen. Hence, just move each todo item to the end of
the list when it is added so we can in the other code ensure that
hw accel for a key will be disabled before it is enabled for the
replacement.

When STAs are expired, we need to hold the sta_lock. Using
the same lock for keys too would then mean we'd need another
key free function, and that'll just lead to confusion, so just
use a new spinlock for all key lists.

There is no need to send BSS changes to driver from beacons processed
during scanning. We are more interested in beacons from an AP with which
we are associated - these will still be used to send updates to driver as
the beacons are received without scanning.
This change·removes the requirement that bss_info_changed needs to be atomic.
The beacons received during scanning are processed from a tasklet, but if we
do not call bss_info_changed for these beacons there is no need for it to be
atomic. This function (bss_info_changed) is called either from workqueue or
ioctl in all other instances.

The previous key locking patch left a small race: it would be possible
to add a key and take the interface down before the key todo is run so
that hwaccel for that key is enabled on an interface that is down. Avoid
this by running the todo list when an interface is brought up or down.
This patch also fixes a small bug: before this change, a few functions
used the key list without the lock that protects it.

Some people are getting this message a lot, and we have traced it to
broken access points that much too often send completely empty frames
(all bytes zeroed, which they shouldn't do at all.)
Since we cannot do anything about such frames in any case except the
special case where we're debugging an AP, just remove the message.

When associating to a b-only AP where there is no ERP IE, short preamble
mode is left at previous state (probably also protection mode). In this
case, disable protection and use short preamble mode as specified in
capability field. The same is done if capability field is changed on-the-fly.

Up to now, key manipulation is supposed to run under RTNL to
avoid concurrent manipulations and also allow the set_key()
hardware callback to sleep. This is not feasible because STA
structs are rcu-protected and thus a lot of operations there
cannot take the RTNL. Also, key references are rcu-protected
so we cannot do things atomically.
This patch changes key locking completely:
* key operations are now atomic
* hardware crypto offload is enabled and disabled from
a workqueue, due to that key freeing is also delayed
* debugfs code is also run from a workqueue
* keys reference STAs (and vice versa!) so during STA
unlink the STAs key reference is removed but not the
keys STA reference, to avoid races key todo work is
run before STA destruction.
* fewer STA operations now need the RTNL which was
required due to key operations
This fixes the locking problems lockdep pointed out and also
makes things more light-weight because the rtnl isn't required
as much.
Note that the key todo lock/key mutex are global locks, this
is not required, of course, they could be per-hardware instead.

When a STA is supposed to be unlinked but is pinned, it still needs
to be unlinked from all structures. Only at the end of the unlink
process should we check for pin status and invalidate the callers
reference if it is pinned. Move the pin status check down.

Unfortunately, debugfs can be made to access invalid memory by
open()ing a file and then waiting until the corresponding debugfs
file has been removed (and, probably, the underlying object.)
That could be exploited by any user if the user is able to open
debugfs files and can cause networking devices, STA entries or
similar to disappear which is quite easy to do.
Hence, all debugfs files should be root-only.

When drivers receive change notification they may do work that
will enable the changes to take effect. For example, if new association
the device needs to be programmed with this information.
Give the driver chance to make the changes before notifying the
upper layer - thus preventing race condition where upper layer
attempts to utilize state that may not be configured yet.

Because we queue the sta-debugfs-adding work on our mac80211
workqueue (which needs to be flushed under RTNL) and that work
needs the RTNL, it can currently deadlock, thanks to Reinette
Chatre for pointing out the lockdep warning about this.
This patch fixes it by moving this work to the common kernel
workqueue (using schedule_work) and canceling it as appropriate.
It also fixes a related problem: When a STA is pinned by the
debugfs adding work and sta_info_flush() runs concurrently
it is not guaranteed that all STAs are removed from the driver
before the corresponding interface is removed which may lead
to bugs.

That patch breaks mesh config comparison between beacons/probe reponses, so
every beacon from a mesh network would be added as a new bss. Since the
comparison has to be performed for every received beacon I believe it is best to
save the mesh config in a format easy to compare, rather than do a bunch of
unaligned accesses to compare field by field.

When the IBSS code tries to flush the STA list, it does so in
an atomic context. Flushing isn't safe there, however, and
requires the RTNL, so we need to defer it to a workqueue.

Calling sta_info_destroy() doesn't require RCU-synchronisation
before-hand because it does that internally. However, it does
require rtnl-locking so insert that where necessary.
Also clean up the code doing it internally to be a bit clearer and
not synchronize twice if keys are configured.

When STA structure insertion fails, it has been allocated but isn't
really alive yet, it isn't reachable by any other code and also can't
yet have much configured. This patch changes the code so that when
the insertion fails, the resulting STA pointer is no longer valid
because it is freed.

sta_info_destroy(NULL) should be valid, but currently isn't because
the argument is dereferenced before the NULL check. There are no
users that currently pass in NULL, i.e. all check before calling the
function, but I want to change that.

When joining a new IBSS, all old stations are flushed, but currently

ieee80211_sta_work is disabled while network interface
is down. Therefore, if you configure wireless parameters
before bringing the interface up, these configurations are
not yet effective and association fails.
A workaround from userspace is calling a command like
'iwconfig wlan0 ap any' after the interface is brought up.
To fix this behaviour, trigger execution of ieee80211_sta_work from
ieee80211_open when in STA or IBSS mode.

This patch reorders some fields in various structures to have
less padding within the structures, making them smaller. It
doesn't yet make any type adjustments, but often size_t is used
for example for IE lengths which is total overkill since size_t
will be 8 bytes long on 64-bit yet the length can at most fill
a u8.

This patch alters the A-MPDU MLME in sta_info to use dynamic allocation,
thus drastically improving memory usage - from a constant ~2 Kbyte in
the previous (static) allocation to a lower limit of ~200 Byte and an upper
limit of ~2 Kbyte.

Default WMM params have to be set according to beacon/probe response
information prior to authentication (or IBSS start/join); beacon queue
is configured only in IBSS. This does not affect the use of 'real' WMM
params as reported by AP.

When you have an AP on channel 13, it will currently often enough
be listed in scan results even when the regulatory domain restricts
to channels 1-11. This is due to channel overlap. To avoid getting
very strange failures, don't show such APs in the scan results. The
failure mode will now go from "I can see the AP but not associate"
to "I can't see the AP although I know it's there" which is easier
to debug.
This problem was first really noticed by Jes Sorensen.

This patch makes mac80211 able to send a phase1 key for TKIP
decryption.
This is needed for drivers that don't do the rekeying by themselves
(i.e. iwlwifi). Upon IV16 wrap around, the packet is decrypted in SW,
if decryption is ok, mac80211 calls to update_tkip_key with a new
phase 1 RX key.

This patch makes mac80211 able to compute a TKIP key from an skb.
The requested key can be a phase 1 or a phase 2 key.
This is useful for drivers who need to provide tkip key to their
HW to enable HW encryption.

Today I hit one of my new WARN_ONs in the mac80211 code because
a key wasn't being freed correctly. After wondering for a while
I finally tracked it to the fact that STA keys aren't added to
the per-sdata key list correctly, they are supposed to always be
on that list, not just for default keys. This patch fixes that.

I noticed a bug I introduced when mesh is enabled: sta_info_destroy()
will end up calling cancel_timer() on a timer that has never been
initialized because the timer is only initialized in mesh_plink_alloc(),
not in sta_info_alloc(). This patch moves the initialization of all mesh
related fields into sta_info_alloc(), adds a bit of sanity checking to
the cfg80211 handlers and sta_info_insert() and makes mesh_plink_alloc()
a static helper function that is only used from the mesh plink code.

Quite a while ago I started this book. The required kernel-doc
patches have since gone into the tree so it is now possible to
build the book in mainline.
The actual documentation is still rather incomplete and not all
things are linked into the book, but this enables us to edit
the documentation collaboratively, hopefully driver authors can
add documentation based on their experience with mac80211.

When we take down an interface, we need to remove the STA info
items that belong to it because otherwise we might invoke a
sta_notify() callback in the driver when we later delete the
STA entries, but in that case the driver will already have
removed its knowledge of the interface they belonged to leading
to confusion. Also, we could invoke the set_tim() callback after
the driver removed its knowledge of the interface, which can
lead to a crash if it requests a beacon with a then-invalid vif
pointer!
A side effect of this patch is that, because it was easier, it
disallows changing the WDS peer while an interface is up. Should
that actually be necessary, it can be added back, but the WDS
peer STA entry may not be added while the interface is UP so for
now I've simplified the WDS peer's STA entry lifetime management.

sta_info_add() has two functions: allocating a station info
structure and inserting it into the hash table/list. Splitting
these two functions allows allocating with GFP_KERNEL in many
places instead of GFP_ATOMIC which is now required by the RCU
protection. Additionally, in many places RCU protection is now
no longer needed at all because between sta_info_alloc() and
sta_info_insert() the caller owns the structure.
This fixes a few race conditions with setting initial flags
and similar, but not all (see comments in ieee80211_sta.c and
cfg.c). More documentation on the existing races will be in
a follow-up patch.

This makes access to the STA hash table/list use RCU to protect
against freeing of items. However, it's not a true RCU, the
copy step is missing: whenever somebody changes a STA item it
is simply updated. This is an existing race condition that is
now somewhat understandable.
This patch also fixes the race key freeing vs. STA destruction
by making sure that sta_info_destroy() is always called under
RTNL and frees the key.

This file implements the on-demand Hybrid Wireless Mesh Protocol, at this moment
using hop-count as the metric. When no mesh path exists for a given destination
or the mesh path is not active, frames addressed to that destination will be
queued and a Path Request frame will be sent. Queued frames will be sent when
the path is resolved (usually after reception of a Path Response) or discarded
if discovery times out. Path Requests will also be sent to refresh paths that
are being used and are close to expiring.
Path Errors are sent when a path discovery process triggered by the attempt to
forward a frame originated in a different mesh point times out. Path Errors are
also sent when a peer link is determined to be unreachable because of high error
rates.
Multiple destination support in Path Requests and Path Errors and precursors
have not been implemented yet.

The mesh path table associates destinations with the next hop to reach them. The
table is a hash of linked lists protected by rcu mechanisms. Every mesh path
contains a lock to protect the mesh path state.
Each outgoing mesh frame requires a look up into this table. Therefore, the
table it has been designed so it is not necessary to hold any lock to find the
appropriate next hop.
If the path is determined to be active within a rcu context we can safely
dereference mpath->next_hop->addr, since it holds a reference to the sta
next_hop. After a mesh path has been set active for the first time it next_hop
must always point to a valid sta. If this is not possible the mpath must be
deleted or replaced in a RCU safe fashion.

ieee80211_sta_scan_result() is my approach to work around wext. This has been
tested with wireless tools version 29 and works as expected (the new interface
mode is just not shown).

The two important features coded in mesh.c are:
Recently Multicast Cache: in on-demand HWMP, multicast traffic is retransmitted
by every receiving node. Even though a mesh TTL counter avoids infinite loops,
it is also necessary to avoid traffic explosion by keeping a cache of multicast
mesh frame that have been received recently. With this feature, maximum number
of retransmissions of a multicast frame for the case of N nodes within the range
of each other would be N. Without it, the maximum number of retransmissions
would be in the order of N^(MESH_TTL - 1).

Merge rate_control_pid_shift_adjust() to rate_control_pid_adjust_rate()
in order to make the learning algorithm aware of constraints on rates. Also
add some comments and rename variables.
This fixes a bug which prevented 802.11b/g non-AP STAs from working with
802.11b only AP STAs.
This patch was originally destined for 2.6.26, and is being backported
to fix a user reported problem in post-2.6.24 kernels.

Even though I thought about it a lot and had also tested it, some
of my recent changes in the key code broke replacing keys, making
the kernel oops because a key is removed from a list while not on
it.
This patch fixes that using the list as an indication whether or
not the key is on it (an empty list means it's not on any list.)
Also, this patch fixes hw accel enabling, the check for not doing
hw accel when the interface is down was lost and is restored by
this.
Additionally, move adding the key to the list into the function
__ieee80211_key_replace() for more consistency.

In order to RCU-ify sta_info, we need to be able to allocate
a key without linking it to an sdata/sta structure (because
allocation cannot be done in an rcu critical section). This
patch splits up ieee80211_key_alloc() and updates all users
appropriately.
While at it, this patch fixes a number of race conditions
such as finally making key replacement atomic, unfortunately
at the expense of more complex code.
Note that this patch documents /existing/ bugs with sta info
and key interaction, there is currently a race condition
when a sta info is freed without holding the RTNL. This will
finally be fixed by a followup patch.

If ieee80211_if_reinit() is called from ieee80211_unregister_hw()
then it is possible that the driver will still request a beacon
(it is allowed to until ieee80211_unregister_hw() has returned.)
This means we need to use an RCU-protected write to the beacon
information even in this function.

When print_mac() was marked as __pure to avoid emitting a function
call in pr_debug() scenarios, a warning in this code surfaced since
it relies on the fact that the buffer is modified and doesn't use

Disallow having more than one IBSS interface up at any time
because of beacon distribution issues, and for now also disallow
having more than one IBSS/STA interface up at the same time
because we use the master interface's BSS struct which would
be completely corrupted when we have more than one up.

When a STA structure is added, it is often checked whether it
already exists before adding it. This, however, isn't done
atomically so there is a race condition that could lead to two
STA structures being added with the same MAC address. This
patch changes sta_info_add() to return an ERR_PTR in case
of failure and adds the failure mode -EEXIST when the STA
already exists.

The TIM flag that is kept in each station's info is completely
useless, there's no code (aside from the debugfs display code)
checking it, hence it can be removed. While doing that, I noticed
that the TIM handling is broken when buffered frames expire, so
fix that.

Drivers should be allowed to simply get a complete new beacon when
set_tim() is invoked (and set_tim() is required for drivers that
just want a beacon template!), so we need to update our own TIM
bitmap before calling set_tim() so that getting the beacon will
now get an already updated beacon.

enable IBSS cell merging. if an IBSS beacon with the same channel, same ESSID
and a TSF higher than the local TSF (mactime) is received, we have to join its
BSSID. while this might not be immediately apparent from reading the 802.11
standard it is compliant and necessary to make IBSS mode functional in many
cases. most drivers have a similar behaviour.
* move the relevant code section (previously only containing debug code) down
to the end of the function, so we can reuse the bss structure.
* we have to compare the mactime (TSF at the time of packet receive) rather
than the current TSF. since mactime is defined as the time the first data
symbol arrived we add the time until byte 24 where the timestamp resides, since
this is how the beacon timestamp is defined. as some some drivers are not able
to give a reliable mactime we fall back to use the current TSF, which will be
enough to catch most (but not all) cases where an IBSS merge is necessary.
* in IBSS mode we want to allow beacons to override probe response info so we
can correctly do merges.
* we don't only configure beacons based on scan results, so change that
message.
* to enable this we have to let all beacons thru in IBSS mode, even if they
have a different BSSID.

So following patch implements usage of the time_after() macro, defined at linux/jiffies.h, which deals with wrapping correctly

This changes mac80211 to pass the burst time to conf_tx in txop
units rather than 0.1msec units. 0.1msec units are only required
by atheros hardware (according to current driver support), all
other drivers do other calculations or require the txop value.
Therefore, it results in fewer calculations and more precision
if we just pass the txop value through to the driver.

When we want to go multiqueue, we will need to know the number of
queues the hardware has for registering the master netdev. This
number is only available in ieee80211_register_hw() rather than
ieee80211_alloc_hw(), so defer allocation of the master device to
ieee80211_register_hw().

Some instances of RX_DROP mean that the frame was useless,
others mean that the frame should be visible in userspace
on "cooked" monitor interfaces. This patch splits up RX_DROP
and changes each instance appropriately.

The _DROP result will need to be split in the RX path but not
in the TX path, so for preparation split up the type into two
types, one for RX and one for TX. Also make sure (via sparse)

Merge rate_control_pid_shift_adjust() to rate_control_pid_adjust_rate()
in order to make the learning algorithm aware of constraints on rates. Also
add some comments and rename variables.
This fixes a bug which prevented 802.11b/g non-AP STAs from working with
802.11b only AP STAs.

This patch removes the 802.1X port acess control enable flag
since it is not required. Instead, set the authorized flag for
each station that we normally communicate with (WDS peers, IBSS
peers and APs we're associated to) and require hostapd to set
the authorized flag for all stations when port control is not
enabled.
Also, since I was working in that area, this documents station
flags and removes the unused "permanent" one.

When checking for the next band to advance to, there
was an off-by-one error that could lead to an access
to an invalid array index. Additionally, the later
check for scan_band >= IEEE80211_NUM_BANDS is not
required since that will never be true.

This patch creates new cfg80211 wiphy API for channel and bitrate
registration and converts mac80211 and drivers to the new API. The
old mac80211 API is completely ripped out. All drivers (except ath5k)
are updated to the new API, in many cases I expect that optimisations
can be done.
Along with the regulatory code I've also ripped out the
IEEE80211_HW_DEFAULT_REG_DOMAIN_CONFIGURED flag, I believe it to be
unnecessary if the hardware simply gives us whatever channels it wants
to support and we then enable/disable them as required, which is pretty
much required for travelling.
Additionally, the patch adds proper "basic" rate handling for STA
mode interface, AP mode interface will have to have new API added
to allow userspace to set the basic rate set, currently it'll be
empty... However, the basic rate handling will need to be moved to
the BSS conf stuff.
I do expect there to be bugs in this, especially wrt. transmit
power handling where I'm basically clueless about how it should work.

This patch adds the API for 3 stages in A-MPDU Tx session flow:
- request mac80211 to start/stop A-MPDU Tx session for specific TID. such a
request should be issued by a load aware element, either mac80211 itself
or external element.
- requests by mac80211 to low-level driver to start/stop Tx aggregation.
notice that low level driver responds now with Starting Sequence Number.
- async feedback by low-level to mac80211 to inform that HW is ready for
next A-MPDU Tx state.
Changes in API to Rx A-MPDU were also made, reflected in iwlwifi changes as
well.

When reworking the port access control code, I forgot multicast frames
and those are now always rejected because the destination station is
not known. This changes the code to allow through multicast frames and
also avoid the sta hash lookup (which is bound to fail) for them.

On the initial device-open we need to defer the hardware reconfiguration
after we incremented the open_count, because the hw_config checks this flag
and won't call the lowlevel driver in case it is zero.

Driver authors should be aware of the alignment requirements, but
not everybody cares about the warning. This patch makes it depend
on a new Kconfig symbol MAC80211_DEBUG_PACKET_ALIGNMENT which can
be enabled regardless of MAC80211_DEBUG and is recommended for
driver authors (only). This also restricts the warning to data
packets so other packets need not be realigned to not trigger the
warning.

When I introduced the alignment warning I forgot the A-MSDU case which
has a different requirement because each frame contains 14-byte 802.3
headers in front of the IP payload. This patch moves the alignment
warning to a place where we know whether we're dealing with an A-MSDU
frame and adjusts it accordingly.

Convert packet schedulers to use the netlink API. Unfortunately a gradual
conversion is not possible without breaking compilation in the middle or
adding lots of casts, so this patch converts them all in one step. The
patch has been mostly generated automatically with some minor edits to
at least allow seperate conversion of classifiers and actions.

Fix last_sample initialization. kzalloc'ing the per-STA data wasn't enough,
as jiffies can assume negative values as well. This fixes a bug which
prevented correct PID operation for a while after booting.

Commit c7a51bda ("mac80211: restructure __ieee80211_rx") extracted
__ieee80211_rx_handle_packet out of __ieee80211_rx and hence changed
the locking rules for __ieee80211_rx_handle_packet(), it is now
invoked under RCU lock. There is, however, one instance left where
it contains an rcu_read_unlock() in an error path, which is a bug.

This patch assigns correct TID to frames transmitted between
two stations in the same BSS in AP mode.
The problem is that skb->protocol is not set to ETH_P_IP and it is wrong
to use that field at this stage.
The fix compares the LLC/Protocol headers explicitly to check if the
encapsulated frame is IP frame

be used by the driver to determine which
interface is trying to send the beacon.

This patch (based on Ron Rindjunsky's) creates a framework for
a unified way to pass BSS configuration to drivers that require
the information, e.g. for implementing power save mode.
This patch introduces new ieee80211_bss_conf structure that is
passed to the driver via the new bss_info_changed() callback
when the BSS configuration changes.
This new BSS configuration infrastructure adds the following
new features:
* drivers are notified of their association AID
* drivers are notified of association status
and replaces the erp_ie_changed() callback. The patch also does
the relevant driver updates for the latter change.

Drivers that support mixed AP/STA operation may well need to
know the type of a virtual interface when iterating over them.

This patch gets rid of the if_id stuff where possible in favour of
a new per-virtual-interface structure "struct ieee80211_vif". This
structure is located at the end of the per-interface structure and
contains a variable length driver-use data area.
This has two advantages:
* removes the need to look up interfaces by if_id, this is better
for working with network namespaces and performance
* allows drivers to store and retrieve per-interface data without
having to allocate own lists/hash tables

Some devices have a seperate LED which indicates if the radio is
enabled or not. This adds a LED trigger to mac80211 where drivers
can hook into when they are interested in radio status changes.

I would argue that mac80211 should handle fixed rates outside the rate
control code, which would also allow them to take effect immediately

This patch changes mac80211's Kconfig/Makefile to:
* select between the PID and the SIMPLE rate control
algorithm as default
* always allow tri-state for the rate control algorithms,
building those that are selected 'y' into the mac80211
module (if that is a module, otherwise all into the kernel)
* force the default rate control algorithm to be built into
mac80211
It also makes both rate control algorithms proper modules again
with MODULE_LICENSE etc.
Only if EMBEDDED is the user allowed to select "NONE" as default
which will cause no algorithm to be selected, this will work
only when the driver brings one itself (e.g. iwlwifi drivers).

This patch handles the reordering of the Rx A-MPDU.
This issue occurs when the sequence of the internal MPDUs is not in the
right order. such a case can be encountered for example when some MPDUs from
previous aggregations were recieved, while others failed, so current A-MPDU
will contain a mix of re-transmited MPDUs and new ones.

This patch makes a separation between Rx frame pre-handling which stays in
__ieee80211_rx and Rx frame handlers, moving to __ieee80211_rx_handle_packet.
Although this separation has no affect in regular mode of operation, this kind
of mechanism will be used in A-MPDU frames reordering as it allows accumulation
of frames during pre-handling, dispatching them to later handling when necessary.

This patch fixes a problem with rx handling on multiple interfaces. Especially
when using hardware-scanning and a wireless driver (i.e. iwlwifi) which is
able to receive data while scanning.
The rx handlers can modify the skb and the frame control field (see
ieee80211_rx_h_remove_qos_control) but since every interface gets its own
copy of the skb each should get its own copy of rx.fc too.
In my case the wlan0-interface did not remove the qos-control from the frame
because the corresponding flag in rx.fc was already removed while processing
the frame on the master interface. Therefore somehow corrupted frames were
passed to the userspace.

This patch moves the decision making about whether a frame is encrypted
with a certain algorithm up into the TX handlers rather than having it
in the crypto algorithm implementation.
This fixes a problem with the radiotap injection code where injecting
a non-data packet and requesting encryption could end up asking the
driver to encrypt a packet without giving it a key.

There are various decisions influencing the decision whether to buffer
a frame for after the next DTIM beacon. The "do we have stations in PS
mode" condition cannot be tested by the driver so mac80211 has to do
that. To ease driver writing for hardware that can buffer frames until
after the next DTIM beacon, introduce a new txctl flag telling the
driver to buffer a specific frame.
While at it, restructure and comment the code for multicast buffering
and remove spurious "inline" directives.

The previous patch left only one user of the ieee80211_is_eapol()
function and that user can be eliminated easily by introducing
a new "frame is EAPOL" flag to handle the frame specially (we
already have this information) instead of doing the (expensive)
ieee80211_is_eapol() all the time.
Also, allow unencrypted frames to be sent when they are injected.

This cleans up the eapol frame handling and some related code in the
receive and transmit paths. After this patch
* EAPOL frames addressed to us or the EAPOL group address are
always accepted regardless of whether they are encrypted or not
* other frames from a station are dropped if PAE is enabled and
the station is not authorized
* unencrypted frames (except the EAPOL frames above) are dropped if
drop_unencrypted is enabled
* some superfluous code that eth_type_trans handles anyway is gone
* port control is done for transmitted packets

This adds a new debugfs file from which rate control relevant events can be
read one event per line. The output includes the current time, so graphs can be
created showing the rate control parameters. This helps in evaluating and
tuning rate control parameters. While at it, we split headers and code for
better readability.

This makes the new PID TX rate control algorithm the default instead of the
rc80211_simple rate control algorithm. The simple algorithm was flawed in
several ways: it wasn't responsive at all and didn't age the information it was
relying on properly. The PID algorithm allows us to tune characteristics such
as responsiveness by adjusting parameters and was found to generally behave
better.
The default algorithm can be overridden to select simple instead. Which
ever algorithm is the default is included as part of the mac80211
module automatically. The other algorithm (simple vs. pid) can
be selected for inclusion as well. If EMBEDDED is selected then
the choice is available to have no default specified and neither
algorithm included in mac80211. The default algorithm can be set
through a modparam.
While at it, mark rc80211-simple as deprecated, and schedule it
for removal.

Add a new rate control algorithm based on a PID controller. It samples the
percentage of failed frames over time, feeds the result into the controller and
uses its output to control the TX rate.

Introduce scan capabilities to WEXT so that userspace can do intelligent
things with scan behavior such as handling hidden SSIDs more gracefully.
If the driver reports a specific scan capability, the driver must
respect the options specified in the iw_scan_req structure when handling
the SIOCSIWSCAN call, unless it's mode or state does not allow it to do
so, in which case it must return an error.
This version switches to Dave Kilroy's suggestion of claiming unused
padding space for the scan_capa field.

Interface iteration in mac80211 can be done without holding any
locks because I converted it to RCU. Initially, I thought this
wouldn't be needed for ieee80211_iterate_active_interfaces but
it's turning out that multi-BSS AP support can be much simpler
in a driver if ieee80211_iterate_active_interfaces can be called
without holding locks. This converts it to use RCU, it adds a
requirement that the callback it invokes cannot sleep.

This patch restructures the Rx handlers chain by incorporating previously
handlers ieee80211_rx_h_802_1x_pae and ieee80211_rx_h_drop_unencrypted
into ieee80211_rx_h_data, already in 802.3 form. this scheme follows more
precisely after the IEEE802.11 data plane archituecture, and will prevent
code duplication to IEEE8021.11n A-MSDU handler.

The scan code in mac80211 makes the software scan assumption in various
places. For example, we stop the Tx queue during a software scan so that
all the Tx packets will be queued by the stack. We also drop frames not
related to scan in the software scan process. But these are not true for
hardware scan.
Some wireless hardwares (for example iwl3945/4965) has the ability to
perform the whole scan process by hardware and/or firmware. The hardware
scan is relative powerful in that it tries to maintain normal network
traffic while doing a scan in the background. Some drivers (i.e iwlwifi)
do provide a way to tune the hardware scan parameters (for example if the
STA is associated, what's the max time could the STA leave from the
associated channel, how long the scans get suspended after returning to
the service channel, etc). But basically this is transparent to the
stack. mac80211 should not stop Tx queues or drop Rx packets during a
hardware scan.
This patch resolves the above problem by spliting the current scan
indicator local->sta_scanning into local->sta_sw_scanning and
local->sta_hw_scanning. It then changes the scan related code to be aware
of hardware scan or software scan in various places. With this patch,
iwlwifi performs much better in the scan-while-associated condition and
disable_hw_scan=1 should never be required.

Sometimes drivers need to know which interfaces are associated with
their hardware. Rather than forcing those drivers to keep track of
the interfaces that were added, this adds an iteration function to
mac80211.
As it is intended to be used from the interface add/remove callbacks,
the iteration function may currently only be called under RTNL.

This changes the SIWTXPOWER ioctl to also accept a txpower setting of
"automatic". Since mac80211 currently cannot tell drivers to automatically
adjust tx power, we select the tx power level of the current channel. While
this is kind of a hack, it certainly saves some iwconfig users from headaches.

Many-many code in the kernel initialized the timer->function
and timer->data together with calling init_timer(timer). There
is already a helper for this. Use it for networking code.
The patch is HUGE, but makes the code 130 lines shorter

When using recvfrom() on a SOCK_DGRAM packet socket, I noticed that the MAC
address passed back for wireless frames was always completely wrong. The
reason for this is that the header parse function assigned to our virtual
interfaces is a function parsing an 802.11 rather than 802.3 header. This
patch fixes it by keeping the default ethernet header operations assigned.

I'm not sure if this is best choice, someone might have better
solutions. But this patch fixed the connection problem when switching
from a WPA enabled AP (using wpa_supplicant) to an open AP (using
iwconfig). The root cause is when we connect to a WPA enabled AP,
wpa_supplicant sets the ifsta->extra_ie thru SIOCSIWGENIE. But if we
stop wpa_supplicant and connect to an open AP with iwconfig, there is
no way to clear the extra_ie so that mac80211 keeps connecting with that.
Someone could argue wpa_supplicant should clear the extra_ie during
its shutdown. But mac80211 should also handle the unexpected shutdown
case (ie. killall -9 wpa_supplicant).

When an interface with promisc/allmulti bit is taken down,
the mac80211 state can become confused. This fixes it by
making mac80211 keep track of all *active* interfaces that
have the promisc/allmulti bit set in the sdata, we sync
the interface bit into sdata at set_multicast_list() time
so this works.

I recently experienced unexplainable behaviour with the b43
driver when I had broken firmware uploaded. The cause may have
been that promisc mode was not correctly enabled or disabled
and this bug may have been the cause.
Note how the values are compared later in the function so
just doing the & will result in the wrong thing being
compared and the test being false almost always.

Make "decrypt failed" and "have no key" debugging messages compile
conditionally upon CONFIG_MAC80211_DEBUG. They have been useful for
finding certain problems in the past, but in many cases they just
clutter a user's logs.
A typical example is an enviornment where multiple SSIDs are using a
single BSSID but with different protection schemes or different keys
for each SSID. In such an environment these messages are just noise.
Let's just leave them for those interested enough to turn-on debugging.

In the long bug-hunt for why dynamic WEP networks didn't work it
turned out that mac80211 incorrectly uses IW_AUTH_KEY_MGMT while
it should use IW_AUTH_PRIVACY_INVOKED to determine whether to
associate to protected networks or not.
This patch changes the behaviour to be that way and clarifies the
existing code.

The driver operations set_ieee8021x(), set_port_auth() and
set_privacy_invoked() are not used by any drivers, except
set_privacy_invoked() they aren't even used by mac80211.
Remove them at least until we need to support drivers with
mac80211 that require getting this information.

Previously, mac80211 would allow registering the same rate control
algorithm twice. This is a programming error in the registration
and should not happen; additionally the second version could never
be selected. Disallow this and warn about it.

Too frequently people do not have module autoloading enabled
or fail to install the rate control module correctly, hence
their hardware probing fails due to no rate control algorithm
being available. This makes the 'simple' algorithm built into
the mac80211 module unless EMBEDDED is enabled in which case
it can be disabled (eg. if the wanted driver requires another
rate control algorithm.)

that the necessary headerfile <linux/scatterlist> is included. This
happened to work for ia64, powerpc, sparc64 and x86 because they
happened to drag in that file via their <asm/dma-mapping.h>.
On most of the others this probably broke.
Instead of increasing the header file spider web I choose to include
<linux/scatterlist.h> directly into the affectes files.

Some APs send management frames with junk padding after the last IE.
We already account for a similar problem with some Apple Airport
devices, but at least one device is known to send more than a single
extra byte. The device in question is the Draytek Vigor2900:

The junk in question looks like an IE that runs off the end of the
frame. This cause us to return ParseFailed. Since the frame in
question is an association response, this causes us to fail to associate
with this AP.
The return code from ieee802_11_parse_elems is superfluous.
All callers still check for the presence of the specific IEs that
interest them anyway. So, remove the return code so the parse never
"fails".

Adam Baker reported that the prism2 ioctl removal changed behaviour
in that now the selection order was the other way around as before.
New API is planned but not done yet, so for now just use the first
matching channel in any mode as was previous behaviour with an unset
next_mode.

The decryption handlers will skip the frame if the RX_FLAG_DECRYPTED
flag is set, so the early flag setting introduced by Johannes breaks
decryption. To work around this, call the handlers first and then set
the flag.

The problem is caused by ieee80211_if_set_type checking for a non-zero
hard_start_xmit pointer value in order to avoid changing that value for
master devices. The fix is to make that check more explicitly linked to
master devices rather than simply checking if the value has been
previously set.

This patch adds sta_notify callback and removes sta_table_notification
which was not used by any driver.
sta_notify() is essential for drivers that keeps notion of station
internally and need to be notified about removal or addition of a station
to the (I)BSS or assocation to an AP.

This improves radiotap injection by removing the shortcut over TX handlers
that led to BUGS when injecting frames without setting a rate and also
resulted in various other quirks. Now, TX handlers are run but some
information that was present in the radiotap header is used instead of
automatic settings.

This moves the sta_process RX handler to after decryption

When we update the counters iff_promiscs and iff_allmultis
in struct ieee80211_local we have no common lock held to
protect them. The problem is that the update to each counter
may not be atomic, so we could end up with iff_promiscs == -1
in unfortunate conditions. To fix it, use atomic_t values.
It doesn't matter whether the two counters are updated
together atomically or not, if there are two invocations
of set_multicast_list we will end up with multiple
configure_filter() invocations of which the latter will always
be correct.

VLAN interfaces have yet another bug: they aren't accounted
for properly in the receive path in prepare_for_handlers().
I noticed this by code inspection, but it would be easy for
the compiler to catch such things if we'd just use the proper
enum where appropriate.

frame although we already know which one will be used. This
changes the code to invoke only the needed handler. It also moves
the wep code into wep.c.

Currently, we run through all three crypto algorithms for each
received frame even though we have previously determined which
key we have and as such already know which algorithm will be
used. Change it to invoke only the needed function. Also move
the WEP decrypt handler to wep.c so that fewer functions need
to be non-static.

This makes mac80211 pass all frames to monitor interfaces early
before all receive processing with the benefit that only a single
copy needs to be made, all monitors can receive clones of the skb
and if the frame will be discarded we don't even need to make a
single copy.

When an interface is registered it is still uninitialised so
ieee80211_if_reinit() can't be called on it (it will oops.)
Hence, we need to move the uninit method assignment.
Also, this patch fixes the bug that the master device is never
initialised nor deinitialised at all. Oddly, the deinit code
had an if statement to not run some code when running for the
master interface (which never happened), but that if statement
is also wrong. Fix that too.
Now that the uninit code is run for the master device, another
bug surfaced: it tries to remove all dependent interfaces and
that oopses or BUGs at some point, either because it unregisters
already unregistered interfaces (missing list_del bug) or due
to trying to iterate a list that has had other things removed.
Fix this too by handling the master interface specially.

Florian Lohoff noticed a bug in mac80211: when bringing the
master interface down while other virtual interfaces are up
we call dev_close() under a spinlock which is not allowed.
This patch removes the sub_if_lock used by mac80211 in favour
of using an RCU list. All list manipulations are already done
under rtnl so are well protected against each other, and the
read-side locks we took in the RX and TX code are already in
RCU read-side critical sections.

This patch changes mac80211 to verify that VLAN interfaces
are valid and not bother drivers about them any more.
VLAN interfaces are now only valid when an AP interface
is up with the same MAC address, and are automatically
turned off when the AP interface is set down.

Drivers are currently supposed to keep track of monitor
interfaces if they allow so-called "hard" monitor, and
they are also supposed to keep track of multicast etc.
This patch changes that, replaces the set_multicast_list()
callback with a new configure_filter() callback that takes
filter flags (FIF_*) instead of interface flags (IFF_*).
For a driver, this means it should open the filter as much
as necessary to get all frames requested by the filter flags.
Accordingly, the filter flags are named "positively", e.g.
FIF_ALLMULTI.
Multicast filtering is a bit special in that drivers that
have no multicast address filters need to allow multicast
frames through when either the FIF_ALLMULTI flag is set or
when the mc_count value is positive.
At the same time, drivers are no longer notified about
monitor interfaces at all, this means they now need to
implement the start() and stop() callbacks and the new
change_filter_flags() callback. Also, the start()/stop()
ordering changed, start() is now called *before* any
add_interface() as it really should be, and stop() after
any remove_interface().
The patch also changes the behaviour of setting the bssid
to multicast for scanning when IEEE80211_HW_NO_PROBE_FILTERING
is set; the IEEE80211_HW_NO_PROBE_FILTERING flag is removed
and the filter flag FIF_BCN_PRBRESP_PROMISC introduced.
This is a lot more efficient for hardware like b43 that
supports it and other hardware can still set the BSSID
to all-ones.

This fixes a warning about NUM_IEEE80211_MODES missing
in a switch statement. Intentionally do not add a default
case so we get warnings at these places if we need to add

This adds support for disabling the radio and setting the TXpower

There are a few TODO comments in the mac80211 sources regarding
hardware offload for Michael MIC verification. Those items are,
however, better handled in the driver instead of the stack, if
any device requires such hand-holding.

Johannes Berg noticed that in __ieee80211_tx_prepare() we try to get the
STA from addr1 of the ieee80211 header when the radiotap header is actually
still at the front of the packet. This patch defers doing that until the
radiotap header is gone.

Work-around for broken APs that use a non-zero key index for WEP
pairwise keys. With this patch, WEP encryption only is exempt from
providing a zero key index.

The TKIP mixing code was added for the benefit of Intel's ipw3945
chipset but that code ended up not using it. We have previously
identified many problems with this code and it crystallized that
library functions for mixing are likely to handle this in much
more generality and might allow b43 to take advantage of hardware
acceleration for TKIP.
Due to these reasons, remove the TKIP mixing for hardware
accelerated crypto operations.

This patch makes the mac80211/driver interface rely only on the
IEEE80211_TXCTL_DO_NOT_ENCRYPT flag to signal to the driver whether
a frame should be encrypted or not, since mac80211 internally no
longer relies on HW_KEY_IDX_INVALID either this removes it, changes
the key index to be a u8 in all places and makes the full range of
the value available to drivers.

No existing drivers use this callback, hence there's no telling
how it might be used. In fact, it is unlikely to be of much use
as-is because the default key index isn't something that the
driver can do much with without knowing which interface it was
for etc. And if it needs the key index for the transmitted frame,
it can get it by keeping a reference to the key_conf structure
and looking it up by hw_key_idx.

During receive processing, we select the key long before using it and
because there's no locking it is possible that we kfree() the key
after having selected it but before using it for crypto operations.
Obviously, this is bad.
Secondly, during transmit processing, there are two possible races: We
have a similar race between select_key() and using it for encryption,
but we also have a race here between select_key() and hardware
encryption (both when a key is removed.)
This patch solves these issues by using RCU: when a key is to be freed,
we first remove the pointer from the appropriate places (sdata->keys,
sdata->default_key, sta->key) using rcu_assign_pointer() and then
synchronize_rcu(). Then, we can safely kfree() the key and remove it
from the hardware. There's a window here where the hardware may still
be using it for decryption, but we can't work around that without having
two hardware callbacks, one to disable the key for RX and one to disable
it for TX; but the worst thing that will happen is that we receive a
packet decrypted that we don't find a key for any more and then drop it.
When we add a key, we first need to upload it to the hardware and then,
using rcu_assign_pointer() again, link it into our structures.
In the code using keys (TX/RX paths) we use rcu_dereference() to get the
key and enclose the whole tx/rx section in a rcu_read_lock() ...
rcu_read_unlock() block. Because we've uploaded the key to hardware
before linking it into internal structures, we can guarantee that it is
valid once get to into tx().
One possible race condition remains, however: when we have hardware
acceleration enabled and the driver shuts down the queues, we end up
queueing the frame. If now somebody removes the key, the key will be
removed from hwaccel and then then driver will be asked to encrypt the
frame with a key index that has been removed. Hence, drivers will need
to be aware that the hw_key_index they are passed might not be under
all circumstances. Most drivers will, however, simply ignore that
condition and encrypt the frame with the selected key anyway, this
only results in a frame being encrypted with a wrong key or dropped
(rightfully) because the key was not valid. There isn't much we can
do about it unless we want to walk the pending frame queue every time
a key is removed and remove all frames that used it.
This race condition, however, will most likely be solved once we add
multiqueue support to mac80211 because then frames will be queued
further up the stack instead of after being processed.

Kalle Valo noticed that QoS frames are sent with an invalid QoS control
field; this is because we increase the header length but neither
initialise the space nor actually have enough space in the header
structure for the QoS control field.
This patch fixes it by treating the QoS field specially and appending it
explicitly, initialising it to zero.

This patch makes most of the generic device layer network
namespace safe. This patch makes dev_base_head a
network namespace variable, and then it picks up
a few associated variables. The functions:

__dev_get_by_name
dev_get_by_index
__dev_get_by_index

wireless_process_ioctl
were modified to take a network namespace argument, and
deal with it.
vlan_ioctl_set and brioctl_set were modified so their
hooks will receive a network namespace argument.
So basically anthing in the core of the network stack that was
affected to by the change of dev_base was modified to handle
multiple network namespaces. The rest of the network stack was
simply modified to explicitly use &init_net the initial network
namespace. This can be fixed when those components of the network
stack are modified to handle multiple network namespaces.
For now the ifindex generator is left global.
Fundametally ifindex numbers are per namespace, or else
we will have corner case problems with migration when
we get that far.
At the same time there are assumptions in the network stack
that the ifindex of a network device won't change. Making
the ifindex number global seems a good compromise until
the network stack can cope with ifindex changes when
you change namespaces, and the like.
