976513dbfc PM / ACPI: Move NVS saving and restoring code to drivers/acpi
The saving of the ACPI NVS area during hibernation and suspend and
restoring it during the subsequent resume is entirely specific to
ACPI, so move it to drivers/acpi and drop the CONFIG_SUSPEND_NVS
configuration option which is redundant.

5262a47502 PM / Hibernate: When failed, in_suspend should be reset
When hibernation failed due to an error in swsusp_write() called by
hibernate(), it skips calling "power_down()" and returns. When
hibernate() is called again (probably after fixing up so that
swsusp_write() wouldn't fail again), before "in_suspend = 1" of
create_image is called, in_suspend should be 0. However, because
hibernate() did not reset "in_suspend" after a failure, it's already 1.

This patch fixes such inconsistency of "in_suspend" value.

8cfe400ca5 Freezer: Fix a race during freezing of TASK_STOPPED tasks
After calling freeze_task(), try_to_freeze_tasks() see whether the
task is stopped or traced and if so, considers it to be frozen;
however, nothing guarantees that either the task being frozen sees
TIF_FREEZE or the freezer sees TASK_STOPPED -> TASK_RUNNING
transition. The task being frozen may wake up and not see TIF_FREEZE
while the freezer fails to notice the transition and believes the task
is still stopped.

This patch fixes the race by making freeze_task() always go through
fake_signal_wake_up() for applicable tasks. The function goes through
the target task's scheduler lock and thus guarantees that either the
target sees TIF_FREEZE or try_to_freeze_task() sees TASK_RUNNING.

be8cd644c4 PM / Hibernate: Restore old swap signature to avoid user space breakage
Commit 3624eb0 (PM / Hibernate: Modify signature used to mark swap)
attempted to modify hibernate signature used to mark swap partitions
containing hibernation images, so that old kernels don't try to
handle compressed images. However, this change broke resume from
hibernation on Fedora 14 that apparently doesn't pass the resume=
argument to the kernel and tries to trigger resume from early user
space. This doesn't work, because the signature is now different,
so the old signature has to be restored to avoid the problem.

c9e664f1fd PM / Hibernate: Fix memory corruption related to swap
There is a problem that swap pages allocated before the creation of
a hibernation image can be released and used for storing the contents
of different memory pages while the image is being saved. Since the
kernel stored in the image doesn't know of that, it causes memory
corruption to occur after resume from hibernation, especially on
systems with relatively small RAM that need to swap often.

This issue can be addressed by keeping the GFP_IOFS bits clear
in gfp_allowed_mask during the entire hibernation, including the
saving of the image, until the system is finally turned off or
the hibernation is aborted. Unfortunately, for this purpose
it's necessary to rework the way in which the hibernate and
suspend code manipulates gfp_allowed_mask.

This change is based on an earlier patch from Hugh Dickins.

9f339caf84 PM / Hibernate: Use async I/O when reading compressed hibernation image
This is a fix for reading LZO compressed image using async I/O.
Essentially, instead of having just one page into which we keep
reading blocks from swap, we allocate enough of them to cover the
largest compressed size and then let block I/O pick them all up. Once
we have them all (and here we wait), we decompress them, as usual.
Obviously, the very first block we still pick up synchronously,
because we need to know the size of the lot before we pick up the
rest.

Also fixed the copyright line, which I've forgotten before.

d4d7762995 block: clean up blkdev_get() wrappers and their users
After recent blkdev_get() modifications, open_by_devnum() and
open_bdev_exclusive() are simple wrappers around blkdev_get().
Replace them with blkdev_get_by_dev() and blkdev_get_by_path().

blkdev_get_by_dev() is identical to open_by_devnum().
blkdev_get_by_path() is slightly different in that it doesn't
automatically add %FMODE_EXCL to @mode.

All users are converted. Most conversions are mechanical and don't
introduce any behavior difference. There are several exceptions.

* btrfs now sets FMODE_EXCL in btrfs_device->mode, so there's no
  reason to OR it explicitly on blkdev_put().

* gfs2, nilfs2 and the generic mount_bdev() now set FMODE_EXCL in
  sb->s_mode.

* With the above changes, sb->s_mode now always should contain
  FMODE_EXCL.  WARN_ON_ONCE() added to kill_block_super() to detect
  errors.

The new blkdev_get_*() functions are with proper docbook comments.
While at it, add function description to blkdev_get() too.

e525fd89d3 block: make blkdev_get/put() handle exclusive access
Over time, block layer has accumulated a set of APIs dealing with bdev
open, close, claim and release.

* blkdev_get/put() are the primary open and close functions.

* bd_claim/release() deal with exclusive open.

* open/close_bdev_exclusive() are combination of open and claim and
  the other way around, respectively.

* bd_link/unlink_disk_holder() to create and remove holder/slave
  symlinks.

* open_by_devnum() wraps bdget() + blkdev_get().

The interface is a bit confusing and the decoupling of open and claim
makes it impossible to properly guarantee exclusive access as
in-kernel open + claim sequence can disturb the existing exclusive
open even before the block layer knows the current open if for another
exclusive access. Reorganize the interface such that,

* blkdev_get() is extended to include exclusive access management.
  @holder argument is added and, if is @FMODE_EXCL specified, it will
  gain exclusive access atomically w.r.t. other exclusive accesses.

* blkdev_put() is similarly extended. It now takes @mode argument and
  if @FMODE_EXCL is set, it releases an exclusive access. Also, when
  the last exclusive claim is released, the holder/slave symlinks are
  removed automatically.

* bd_claim/release() and close_bdev_exclusive() are no longer
  necessary and either made static or removed.

* bd_link_disk_holder() remains the same but bd_unlink_disk_holder()
  is no longer necessary and removed.

* open_bdev_exclusive() becomes a simple wrapper around lookup_bdev()
  and blkdev_get(). It also has an unexpected extra bdev_read_only()
  test which probably should be moved into blkdev_get().

* open_by_devnum() is modified to take @holder argument and pass it to
  blkdev_get().

Most of bdev open/close operations are unified into blkdev_get/put()
and most exclusive accesses are tested atomically at the open time (as
it should). This cleans up code and removes some, both valid and
invalid, but unnecessary all the same, corner cases.

open_bdev_exclusive() and open_by_devnum() can use further cleanup -
rename to blkdev_get_by_path() and blkdev_get_by_devt() and drop
special features. Well, let's leave them for another day.

Most conversions are straight-forward. drbd conversion is a bit more
involved as there was some reordering, but the logic should stay the
same.

e1f60b292f PM: Introduce library for device-specific OPPs (v7)
SoCs have a standard set of tuples consisting of frequency and
voltage pairs that the device will support per voltage domain. These
are called Operating Performance Points or OPPs. The actual
definitions of OPP varies over silicon versions. For a specific domain,
we can have a set of {frequency, voltage} pairs. As the kernel boots
and more information is available, a default set of these are activated
based on the precise nature of device. Further on operation, based on
conditions prevailing in the system (such as temperature), some OPP
availability may be temporarily controlled by the SoC frameworks.

To implement an OPP, some sort of power management support is necessary
hence this library depends on CONFIG_PM.

074037ec79 PM / Wakeup: Introduce wakeup source objects and event statistics (v3)
Introduce struct wakeup_source for representing system wakeup sources

Make the recently introduced helper functions pm_wakeup_event(),
pm_stay_awake() and pm_relax() use struct wakeup_source objects
internally, so that wakeup statistics associated with wakeup devices
can be collected and reported in a consistent way (the definition of
pm_relax() is changed, which is harmless, because this function is
not called directly by anyone yet). Introduce new wakeup-related
sysfs device attributes in /sys/devices/.../power for reporting the
device wakeup statistics.

Change the global wakeup events counters event_count and
events_in_progress into atomic variables, so that it is not necessary
to acquire a global spinlock in pm_wakeup_event(), pm_stay_awake()
and pm_relax(), which should allow us to avoid lock contention in
these functions on SMP systems with many wakeup devices.

6715045ddc PM / Hibernate: Avoid hitting OOM during preallocation of memory
There is a problem in hibernate_preallocate_memory() that it calls
preallocate_image_memory() with an argument that may be greater than
the total number of available non-highmem memory pages. If that's
the case, the OOM condition is guaranteed to trigger, which in turn
can cause significant slowdown to occur during hibernation.

To avoid that, make preallocate_image_memory() adjust its argument
before calling preallocate_image_pages(), so that the total number of
saveable non-highem pages left is not less than the minimum size of
a hibernation image. Change hibernate_preallocate_memory() to try to
allocate from highmem if the number of pages allocated by
preallocate_image_memory() is too low.

Modify free_unnecessary_pages() to take all possible memory
allocation patterns into account.

910321ea81 swap: revert special hibernation allocation
Please revert 2.6.36-rc commit d2997b1042
"hibernation: freeze swap at hibernation". It complicated matters by
adding a second swap allocation path, just for hibernation; without in any
way fixing the issue that it was intended to address - page reclaim after
fixing the hibernation image might free swap from a page already imaged as
swapcache, letting its swap be reallocated to store a different page of
the image: resulting in data corruption if the imaged page were freed as
clean then swapped back in. Pages freed to si->swap_map were still in
danger of being reallocated by the alternative allocation path.

I guess it inadvertently fixed slow SSD swap allocation for hibernation,
as reported by Nigel Cunningham: by missing out the discards that occur on
the usual swap allocation path; but that was unintentional, and needs a
separate fix.

d2997b1042 hibernation: freeze swap at hibernation
When taking a memory snapshot in hibernate_snapshot(), all (directly
called) memory allocations use GFP_ATOMIC. Hence swap misusage during
hibernation never occurs.

But from a pessimistic point of view, there is no guarantee that no page
allcation has __GFP_WAIT. It is better to have a global indication "we
enter hibernation, don't use swap!".

This patch tries to freeze new-swap-allocation during hibernation. (All
user processes are frozenm so swapin is not a concern).

This way, no updates will happen to swap_map[] between
hibernate_snapshot() and save_image(). Swap is thawed when swsusp_free()
is called. We can be assured that swap corruption will not occur.

c125e96f04 PM: Make it possible to avoid races between wakeup and system sleep
One of the arguments during the suspend blockers discussion was that
the mainline kernel didn't contain any mechanisms making it possible
to avoid races between wakeup and system suspend.

Generally, there are two problems in that area. First, if a wakeup
event occurs exactly when /sys/power/state is being written to, it
may be delivered to user space right before the freezer kicks in, so
the user space consumer of the event may not be able to process it
before the system is suspended. Second, if a wakeup event occurs
after user space has been frozen, it is not generally guaranteed that
the ongoing transition of the system into a sleep state will be
aborted.

To address these issues introduce a new global sysfs attribute,
/sys/power/wakeup_count, associated with a running counter of wakeup
events and three helper functions, pm_stay_awake(), pm_relax(), and
pm_wakeup_event(), that may be used by kernel subsystems to control
the behavior of this attribute and to request the PM core to abort
system transitions into a sleep state already in progress.

The /sys/power/wakeup_count file may be read from or written to by
user space. Reads will always succeed (unless interrupted by a
signal) and return the current value of the wakeup events counter.
Writes, however, will only succeed if the written number is equal to
the current value of the wakeup events counter. If a write is
successful, it will cause the kernel to save the current value of the
wakeup events counter and to abort the subsequent system transition
into a sleep state if any wakeup events are reported after the write
has returned.

[The assumption is that before writing to /sys/power/state user space
will first read from /sys/power/wakeup_count. Next, user space
consumers of wakeup events will have a chance to acknowledge or
veto the upcoming system transition to a sleep state. Finally, if
the transition is allowed to proceed, /sys/power/wakeup_count will
be written to and if that succeeds, /sys/power/state will be written
to as well. Still, if any wakeup events are reported to the PM core
by kernel subsystems after that point, the transition will be
aborted.]

Additionally, put a wakeup events counter into struct dev_pm_info and
make these per-device wakeup event counters available via sysfs,
so that it's possible to check the activity of various wakeup event
sources within the kernel.

To illustrate how subsystems can use pm_wakeup_event(), make the
low-level PCI runtime PM wakeup-handling code use it.

a0a1a5fd4f workqueue: reimplement workqueue freeze using max_active
Currently, workqueue freezing is implemented by marking the worker
freezeable and calling try_to_freeze() from dispatch loop.
Reimplement it using cwq->limit so that the workqueue is frozen
instead of the worker.

* workqueue_struct->saved_max_active is added which stores the
  specified max_active on initialization.

* On freeze, all cwq->max_active's are quenched to zero. Freezing is
  complete when nr_active on all cwqs reach zero.

* On thaw, all cwq->max_active's are restored to wq->saved_max_active
  and the worklist is repopulated.

This new implementation allows having single shared pool of workers

5a0e3ad6af include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h
percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being
included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which
in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files
universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies.

percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for
this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those
headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion
needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is
used as the basis of conversion.

  http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py

The script does the followings.

* Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that
  only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used,
  gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h.

* When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include
  blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms
  to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains
  core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered -
  alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there
  doesn't seem to be any matching order.

* If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly
  because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out
  an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the
  file.

The conversion was done in the following steps.

1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly
   over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h
   and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400
   files.

2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion,
   some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or
   embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added
   inclusions to around 150 files.

3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits
   from #2 to make sure no file was left behind.

4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed.
   e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab
   APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually.

5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically
   editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h
   files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h
   inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually
   wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each
   slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as
   necessary.

6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h.

7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures
   were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my
   distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few
   more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things
   build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq).

   * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config.
   * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig
   * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig
   * ia64 SMP allmodconfig
   * s390 SMP allmodconfig
   * alpha SMP allmodconfig
   * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig

8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as
   a separate patch and serve as bisection point.

Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step
6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch.
If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch
headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of
the specific arch.

5a7aadfe2f Freezer: Fix buggy resume test for tasks frozen with cgroup freezer
When the cgroup freezer is used to freeze tasks we do not want to thaw
those tasks during resume. Currently we test the cgroup freezer
state of the resuming tasks to see if the cgroup is FROZEN. If so
then we don't thaw the task. However, the FREEZING state also indicates
that the task should remain frozen.

This also avoids a problem pointed out by Oren Ladaan: the freezer state
transition from FREEZING to FROZEN is updated lazily when userspace reads
or writes the freezer.state file in the cgroup filesystem. This means that
resume will thaw tasks in cgroups which should be in the FROZEN state if
there is no read/write of the freezer.state file to trigger this
transition before suspend.

NOTE: Another "simple" solution would be to always update the cgroup
freezer state during resume. However it's a bad choice for several reasons:
Updating the cgroup freezer state is somewhat expensive because it requires
walking all the tasks in the cgroup and checking if they are each frozen.
Worse, this could easily make resume run in N^2 time where N is the number
of tasks in the cgroup. Finally, updating the freezer state from this code
path requires trickier locking because of the way locks must be ordered.

Instead of updating the freezer state we rely on the fact that lazy
updates only manage the transition from FREEZING to FROZEN. We know that
a cgroup with the FREEZING state may actually be FROZEN so test for that
state too. This makes sense in the resume path even for partially-frozen
cgroups -- those that really are FREEZING but not FROZEN.

452aa6999e mm/pm: force GFP_NOIO during suspend/hibernation and resume
There are quite a few GFP_KERNEL memory allocations made during
suspend/hibernation and resume that may cause the system to hang, because
the I/O operations they depend on cannot be completed due to the
underlying devices being suspended.

Avoid this problem by clearing the __GFP_IO and __GFP_FS bits in
gfp_allowed_mask before suspend/hibernation and restoring the original
values of these bits in gfp_allowed_mask durig the subsequent resume.

a9c9b4429d PM / Hibernate: Fix preallocating of memory
The hibernate memory preallocation code allocates memory to push some
user space data out of physical RAM, so that the hibernation image is
not too large. It allocates more memory than necessary for creating
the image, so it has to release some pages to make room for
allocations made while suspending devices and disabling nonboot CPUs,
or the system will hang due to the lack of free pages to allocate
from. Unfortunately, the function used for freeing these pages,
free_unnecessary_pages(), contains a bug that prevents it from doing
the job on all systems without highmem.

Fix this problem, which is a regression from the 2.6.30 kernel, by
using the right condition for the termination of the loop in
free_unnecessary_pages().

5ada918b82 vt: introduce and use vt_kmsg_redirect() function
The kernel offers with TIOCL_GETKMSGREDIRECT ioctl() the possibility to
redirect the kernel messages to a specific console.

However, since it's not possible to switch to the kernel message console
after a panic(), it would be nice if the kernel would print the panic
message on the current console.

This patch series adds a new interface to access the global kmsg_redirect
variable by a function to be able to use it in code where
CONFIG_VT_CONSOLE is not set (kernel/panic.c).

This patch:

Instead of using and exporting a global value kmsg_redirect, introduce a
function vt_kmsg_redirect() that both can set and return the console where
messages are printed.

Change all users of kmsg_redirect (the VT code itself and kernel/power.c)
to the new interface.

The main advantage is that vt_kmsg_redirect() can also be used when
CONFIG_VT_CONSOLE is not set.

98e73dc5d2 PM / Hibernate / Memory hotplug: Always use for_each_populated_zone()
Use for_each_populated_zone() instead of for_each_zone() in hibernation
code. This fixes a bug on s390, where we allow both config options
HIBERNATION and MEMORY_HOTPLUG, so that we also have a ZONE_MOVABLE
here. We only allow hibernation if no memory hotplug operation was
performed, so in fact both features can only be used exclusively, but
this way we don't need 2 differently configured (distribution) kernels.

If we have an unpopulated ZONE_MOVABLE, we allow hibernation but run
into a BUG_ON() in memory_bm_test/set/clear_bit() because hibernation
code iterates through all zones, not only the populated zones, in
several places. For example, swsusp_free() does for_each_zone() and
then checks for pfn_valid(), which is true even if the zone is not
populated, resulting in a BUG_ON() later because the pfn cannot be
found in the memory bitmap.

Replacing all occurences of for_each_zone() in hibernation code with
for_each_populated_zone() would fix this issue.

ef4aede3f1 PM/Hibernate: Do not try to allocate too much memory too hard (rev. 2)
We want to avoid attempting to free too much memory too hard during
hibernation, so estimate the minimum size of the image to use as the
lower limit for preallocating memory.

The approach here is based on the (experimental) observation that we
can't free more page frames than the sum of:

* global_page_state(NR_SLAB_RECLAIMABLE)
* global_page_state(NR_ACTIVE_ANON)
* global_page_state(NR_INACTIVE_ANON)
* global_page_state(NR_ACTIVE_FILE)
* global_page_state(NR_INACTIVE_FILE)

minus

* global_page_state(NR_FILE_MAPPED)

Namely, if this number is subtracted from the number of saveable
pages in the system, we get a good estimate of the minimum reasonable
size of a hibernation image.

Since the hibernation code is now going to use allocations of memory

7f33d49a2e mm, PM/Freezer: Disable OOM killer when tasks are frozen
Currently, the following scenario appears to be possible in theory:

* Tasks are frozen for hibernation or suspend.
* Free pages are almost exhausted.
* Certain piece of code in the suspend code path attempts to allocate
  some memory using GFP_KERNEL and allocation order less than or
  equal to PAGE_ALLOC_COSTLY_ORDER.
* __alloc_pages_internal() cannot find a free page so it invokes the
  OOM killer.
* The OOM killer attempts to kill a task, but the task is frozen, so
  it doesn't die immediately.
* __alloc_pages_internal() jumps to 'restart', unsuccessfully tries
  to find a free page and invokes the OOM killer.
* No progress can be made.

Although it is now hard to trigger during hibernation due to the memory
shrinking carried out by the hibernation code, it is theoretically
possible to trigger during suspend after the memory shrinking has been
removed from that code path. Moreover, since memory allocations are
going to be used for the hibernation memory shrinking, it will be even
more likely to happen during hibernation.

To prevent it from happening, introduce the oom_killer_disabled switch
that will cause __alloc_pages_internal() to fail in the situations in
which the OOM killer would have been called and make the freezer set
this switch after tasks have been successfully frozen.

fe419535d8 PM/Hibernate: Move memory shrinking to snapshot.c (rev. 2)
A future patch is going to modify the memory shrinking code so that
it will make memory allocations to free memory instead of using an
artificial memory shrinking mechanism for that. For this purpose it
is convenient to move swsusp_shrink_memory() from
kernel/power/swsusp.c to kernel/power/snapshot.c, because the new
memory-shrinking code is going to use things that are local to
kernel/power/snapshot.c .

[rev. 2: Make some functions static and remove their headers from
 kernel/power/power.h]

c6f37f1219 PM/Suspend: Do not shrink memory before suspend
Remove the shrinking of memory from the suspend-to-RAM code, where
it is not really necessary.

d161630297 PM core: rename suspend and resume functions
This patch (as1241) renames a bunch of functions in the PM core.
Rather than go through a boring list of name changes, suffice it to
say that in the end we have a bunch of pairs of functions:

	device_resume_noirq	dpm_resume_noirq
	device_resume		dpm_resume
	device_complete		dpm_complete
	device_suspend_noirq	dpm_suspend_noirq
	device_suspend		dpm_suspend
	device_prepare		dpm_prepare

in which device_X does the X operation on a single device and dpm_X
invokes device_X for all devices in the dpm_list.

In addition, the old dpm_power_up and device_resume_noirq have been
combined into a single function (dpm_resume_noirq).

Lastly, dpm_suspend_start and dpm_resume_end are the renamed versions
of the former top-level device_suspend and device_resume routines.
